Mewscraft were first approached by Sai and Roshana Malik after being recommended by one of our previous clients. Their plan was to open their first optical practice in the quaint town of Redbourn, just north of London. The brief was to transform the former photography studio into a fully working practice with a design that was in-keeping with the area. As it was a new start up business it was important to be keep to a reasonable budget.
The listed building proposed some challenges with sloping floors, walls and a very low ceiling that could not be recessed into. Our designers worked closely with both Sai and Roshana to answer their brief, carving up the space to fit in a new consulting room, reception, waiting, dispensing and display areas. We came up with a lighting solution which overcome the problem of not being able to touch the ceiling in the main retail area. This included the clever use of LED wall lights and incorporating LED spots and strips within the displays themselves. The displays were a mixture of bespoke open-fronted cabinets with dramatic spot lighting, ‘floating’ LED shelves, clear acrylic PIN panels, glass shelves and feature LED cubes. A soft colour palette was chosen for the scheme which works harmoniously with the warm wood textures in the floor and furniture detail.
We developed a new company logo shaping their brand identity for the practice. The signage and shopfront were given a new lease of life with a fresh teal colour to reflect their new brand.
Ultimately, the overall scheme was practical but elegant with a slight boutique feel, attracting a variety of new customers from the area.
