Martin Storey Opticians, Suffolk

Mewscraft first met Martin Storey at 100% Optical at the beginning of 2017. With a thriving practice in Beccles, Martin was undertaking a new challenge and renovating a listed building in Bungay to open his second practice.

Martin worked with Mewscraft from the beginning, discussing lighting and electrical plans, as well as displays, furniture and flooring. The heritage of the property presented many challenges to our designers, low ceilings and limited space on the ground floor required some creative design thinking and space saving ideas.

Due to the buildings listed nature, we couldn’t recess any lighting into the ceiling, and with a ceiling height of just over 2m on the ground floor, sourcing the right fittings was essential. To get the maximum amount of light whilst maintaining as much ceiling height as possible, we opted for linear LED lighting in a warm tone to suit the homely nature of the practice.

Martin wanted to display plenty of frames at the Bungay practice, and so we opted primarily for Tubix Circo rods, 18’s and 12H’s, to provide the numbers he was looking for. We mounted the rods in a variety of ways, ranging from straight to the wall, to a rotating shop-in-shop display, to a backlit LED panel. The first floor frame displays are a real feature of this design, incorporating both LED Halo lighting and dimmable LED backlit panels.

A cosy feel was vital for this village location. The red wallpaper, dark woods and Martin’s excellent attention to detail have helped transform this building into a beautifully, warm and modern practice. Congratulations Martin on a wonderful second practice.
