Gwynns Opticians first approached Mewscraft at the end of 2018. With an expanding customer base, their Tonypandy branch was struggling to cope with the demand on their two consulting rooms.
They needed to create an additional third testing room at the practice as well as a dedicated pre-test room. Upon initial consultation and survey, it became very clear to the Mewscraft team that the practice had more than enough space, but this space wasn’t being used in the most functional way. The existing two consultation rooms were far larger than average and large amounts of space was being lost in corridors and walk ways.
Following initial measure up, the team set to work, creating ideas and plans which involved the knocking down of a few walls! The resulting layout allowed the practice to incorporate three consulting rooms and a pre-test room, entirely on the ground floor.
The new scheme involved knocking through a structural wall to create a new doorway, as well as building new foundations to alter the line of the shopfront. Such structural changes involved consultation and approval from Building Regulations, planning permission from the Council, and an asbestos survey, all of which Mewscraft handled with ease.
In July 2019, Mewscraft’s team set to work on site. The first priority was to remove all existing displays, furniture, ceilings, partitioning and take the building back to its bare bones. The shopfront was removed and hoarding erected. Asbestos had been identified in the survey and so a dedicated team was employed to remove this.
Over the following five weeks, a new doorway and lintel were installed in the structural wall, new foundations were dug and cavity walls built to support the new shopfront. New partitioning created the testing rooms and the dedicated pre-test room. The ground floor was completely re-wired and data cabling added. Ceiling grids were fixed and LED background, emergency and spotlighting installed. New air conditioning units and condensers were put in place in the main retail area and each of the testing rooms. New flooring was laid and decoration was completed throughout the ground floor. All ultimately working towards the installation of the new displays and furniture, and a brand new look for the practice to unveil.
It was a joy to work alongside the team at Gwynns Opticians, Tonypandy. The resulting practice is fresh, modern and above all offers them the functionality the practice so desperately needed.
